Active Learning through Collaboration
ENGLISH MUCH ADO CONFERENCE 2011
Much Ado about Collaboration
I have been teaching English at Mount Roskill Grammar School in Auckland for the past 9 years and loving it! Before that I was teaching in England and before that Zimbabwe. I was born in Kenya and went to Rhodes University in SA. I also went to bible college in Dallas Texas so you could say I have travelled quite a bit. Along with travelling, I also enjoy being a Christian, my family, reading, tramping, snorkeling, body surfing and finding innovative ways of helping my students to be 'life-long learners' and the best they can be. I joined the MRGS eLearning Lead team in 2010 and this was definitely a gateway to a world of opportunities to augment teaching and learning using a range of ICT technologies. I soon found that my main interest was in collaborative learning. I also found that as much as I could see the value in collaboration it was quite another task to get students engaged in effective collaboration. I have conducted several inquiries into the benefits of collaborative learning and implementing it in the classroom which have led me to focus mainly on MyPortfolio as a platform for collaborative teaching and learning. In addition to MyPortfolio I have integrated the use of twitter, Wallwisher, Voicethread, Google docs, Facebook and of course our own school IMS. I have also joined range of communities for my own professional development as is demonstrated by my Personal Learning Network below.
